Symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) can keep you from falling asleep, robbing you of the amount of quality sleep you need for optimal health. Learn more about the symptoms and seek treatment at Neurology & Sleep Medicine in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

Describing RLS

The symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome are often hard to describe. People use a number of descriptions to label the leg irritation they experience, including:

  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Throbbing
  • Creepy-crawling feeling

These sensations are different than those caused by neuropathy. One of the distinguishing characteristics is that symptoms are only present at when lying down to sleep and/or after long periods of sitting. Kicking or walking usually completely relieves the symptoms.

For some people, RLS may also include leg cramping or uncontrollable periodic limb movements.

Diagnosing RLS

The symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome or the syndrome itself may be an indicator of an underlying medical condition, such as:

  • Iron deficiency
  • Pregnancy
  • Diabetes

In many cases, further diagnostic evaluation is ordered to rule out other more serious conditions. If leg irritation is the actual sleep problem, relief may come from exercise, massage and other lifestyle changes.
