Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep apnea robs you of quality sleep. Over time, the lack of restful sleep erodes your overall health. Fortunately, there is treatment for sleep apnea. Get sleep apnea treatment and a higher level of care at Neurology & Sleep Medicine in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Why You Need Treatment for Sleep Apnea

Leaving sleep apnea untreated can result in more than just daytime fatigue and moodiness. When your body does not get sufficient restorative sleep or oxygenation, your health suffers. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been linked to increased risk for:

  • High blood pressure
  • Arrhythmia
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes
  • Weight gain and obesity-related illnesses
  • Fatigue-related accidents on the road or at work

When you experience a near-constant brain fog—i.e., inability to concentrate, difficulty remembering—your quality of life diminishes, too.

Preferred Sleep Apnea Treatment

The treatment of choice for sleep apnea is positive airway pressure (PAP). Continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP/BIPAP/Auto PAP, is maintained through a special mask that gently forces air through your nose and/or mouth to prevent the tissues in the mouth or throat from blocking your airways.

Alternative Sleep Apnea Treatments

CPAP works for the majority of people with sleep apnea. However, some people have difficulty adjusting to continuous positive airway pressure and/or the mask. For people who cannot tolerate CPAP, treatment options include:

  • Bi-level positive air pressures (biPAP), which applies two rates of pressure—one during inhalation, one during exhalation—to keep airways open and increase comfort
  • Surgery to remove excess tissue obstructing airways (this is the most common treatment for sleep apnea in children since the tonsils and/or adenoids are often the cause of airway obstruction)
  • Body position modification
  • Oral devices

PAP is almost always encouraged before alternative treatments are considered as it is the gold standard for sleep apnea and treats 100% of the problem (as opposed to alternative options that only partially treat the problem).
